Privacy Policy

Who we are

The BuildTheBuild giveaway is run by BuildTheBuild, 3631 Truxel Rd #1075, Sacramento, CA 95834, USA, which is the controller of the information described here. For anything about your data, email privacy@buildthebuild.us.

What we collect

• When you enter: your first name, last name, and email address.
• Your country, worked out from your IP address at the moment you enter. We use the country only, we do not keep the IP address it came from, and we do not derive your city or any more precise location from it.
• If you choose to complete the optional step after confirming: state or region, postal code, phone number, social handles, and how you found us.
• Campaign data: the consent text and version you agreed to, the time you entered, and any UTM or referral values in the link you arrived on.
• Only if you win: the further details needed to verify eligibility and award the prize, which may include your date of birth, street address, and tax details. We never ask for these at signup.

What we do not collect

We do not store your IP address. Our abuse controls keep a one-way hash of it, which cannot be turned back into the original address, and the country lookup above happens in memory and is discarded. We do not track you across other websites, and we do not buy information about you from anyone else.

Why we collect it

To run the giveaway, to confirm that entries are genuine and unique, to understand where entries are coming from, to contact the winner and meet tax and record-keeping obligations, and, only if you opted in, to send you build updates and voting reminders.

Where the law where you live requires a legal basis, we rely on the performance of the Official Rules between you and us to run the giveaway, on our legitimate interest in preventing fraudulent and duplicate entries, on your consent for marketing email, and on legal obligation for tax and record-keeping.

Marketing is separate

Accepting the Official Rules is required to enter. Agreeing to marketing email is optional, is never a condition of entering, and is recorded separately. You can unsubscribe at any time using the link in any marketing email, and doing so does not affect your entry.

Analytics and advertising

We use only what the giveaway needs: security and abuse prevention, the referral values described above, and site analytics that carry no personal information. We do not use advertising pixels, we do not build advertising profiles, we do not retarget you, and we run no third-party advertising trackers on this site.

Who we share it with

We do not sell your personal information and we do not share it for advertising. We share it with Microsoft, whose Azure services host this site, store the entry database, and deliver our email, and with anyone we are required by law to share it with. If the giveaway or the business behind it is transferred to someone else, entry records may transfer with it, and this policy continues to apply until you are told otherwise.

Where your data is processed

Your information is stored and processed in the United States. The giveaway is open worldwide, so if you enter from outside the United States you are asking us to transfer your information there in order to process your entry, and by entering you consent to that transfer. United States law may give your information less protection than the law where you live. If you would rather not have your data transferred, do not enter.

How long we keep it

• Entries that are never confirmed are deleted automatically after 30 days.
• Confirmed entries are kept until 3 years after the prize is awarded, then deleted.
• Winner and tax records are kept for 7 years, which is how long we may need to evidence the award.
• Marketing contact details are kept until you unsubscribe.

Your rights

You can ask us for a copy of the information we hold about you, ask us to correct it, ask us to delete it, ask us to stop using it for marketing, or object to how we are using it. Email privacy@buildthebuild.us and we will respond within 30 days. We will never treat you differently for exercising any of these rights.

Deleting your information before the drawing also removes your entry, and we cannot restore it afterwards. If you are in a country with a data protection authority, you also have the right to complain to it.

Security

Entry data is stored in an access-restricted database. Confirmation and unsubscribe links are single-use, time-limited, and stored only as hashes, so a copy of the database cannot be used to replay them. We keep personal information out of our application logs and analytics.

Children

This site and the giveaway are not for anyone under 18. We do not knowingly collect information from children. If you believe a child has entered, email us and we will delete the record.

Changes to this policy

If we change this policy in a way that matters, we will update the effective date at the top and, where practicable, email entrants who are registered with us at the time.
